NEWSLETTER – MAY 2021

Judging by the number of skirts that have been swapped for trousers, it certainly seems as though winter has begun to show its face. There are still some fantastic scores out there though so long may it last!

Club Captain: At probably the shortest AGM in the Club’s history, Dirk Develter became our new Club Captain and many of you would have met Dirk when he introduced himself to your group. Tony Breeds, after a number of years putting his heart into club matters, may now enjoy just getting out there and playing golf. We wish Dirk all the best. Dirk plans to come out and play with each playing group in order to get to know more of us and to understand what our club days are all about.

9 Hole Golf is moving and shaking through its programme, pennants and interclub. Currently the 9 Hole interclub team is running second and is only 0.5 of a point behind the leaders. Good luck ladies in your round next week! A Mid-Winter Xmas Tournament/Fun Day will be run by the 9 Hole ladies on 13 July and they are to include the 9 Hole Men, of which there are a surprisingly good number. A new competition this year called the Phyl Sandlant Pairs is a great initiative and run along the same lines as the 18 Hole Olga Johnson Pairs. Also a lovely tribute to our good friend Phyl.

Lady Vets have every right to do a jig, they have finally been able to achieve two full tee times on a Monday – a much appreciated improvement. This will make the world of difference to their day and ensure that players teeing off first do not have to abandon prize-giving because of a long wait for those teeing off last. Unfortunately it means that the 9 hole lady vets are teeing off after the 18 hole ladies but this will be an advantage on frosty or very cold days. Althorp Grandparents Tournament on 22 March was a great success as always and well run by Chris Carrington and her team. Sandra Cooney and Graham Kerr took out the Women’s and Men’s first prize respectively.

Saturday Ladies are progressing well with three additional players joining them for Saturday competitions. Due to the Mt Business Teams Tournament being over subscribed and our players missing out, Saturday ladies ran a mini-teams tournament of their own on that day. It was a great day and well done to Wendy and her team. The winning team by quite a margin were – Jackie Reynish, Anne Partridge, Noelene Dynes and Margot McCool. (Word has it that Noelene went completely mad and had the round of her life!!!). Saturday ladies commence their Pennants Matchplay on 30th May so good luck ladies.

Wednesday Ladies are ripping through their programme even though it took three Wednesdays before Round 2 of Top Cat could be played due to the rain deciding to attend Wednesday golf. Easter Bonnet Day was a washout so save those hats for next year. Mid-week Matchplay Pennants have commenced and the competition is hot. Our Tauranga ladies are still looking for the top position to defend their title so lets hope they have a brilliant round at the Mount on Monday 24th.

Big congratulations to Trish Aplin who competed in the Rotorua Marathon (a gruelling event) to raise funds for Waipuna Hospice. Trish raised a very admirable $700 for her efforts – congratulations Trish!!

WOMENS GOLF NZ DISTRICT TEAMS EVENT – WHAKATANE 3RD MAY

Our Tauranga Team of Alison Holdem, Megan Bailey, Suzanne Proudfoot and Vanessa Charman-Moore had a great day. They achieved 3rd Place in a field of 24 clubs/teams. They all played well and came home with prizes and their names in lights. Well done ladies!
