A FEW WORDS FROM CLUB CAPTAIN - TONY BREEDS
Allow images

I consider it an honour and a privilege to be able to represent you as a member of the Tauranga Golf Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your loyalty and patience in what has been a “trying” year so far, I would also like to thank our staff for adapting to the changing environment we found ourselves in, and the numerous volunteers for the work they do on and around our course.

There are a number of issues arising from the AGM and my replies with due consideration and input from my peers, are detailed below.

Please be aware that if you have any matters that you wish to raise with Management, please don't wait for an AGM, we would prefer to resolve issues at the time they happen. The following is a brief overview of how matters should be addressed.
  • Matters relating specifically to Mens or Womens Golf - raise with your Captain or Convenor who will respond or take to the Players Committee.
  • Matters relating to the Course in General - raise this with the Club Captain
  • General matters relating to Club Policy, procedures, staff, membership etc - raise this with the Club Manager (Michelle) who can either respond or refer to the Board as necessary.
In closing, we must be able to adapt and move forward in a positive manner as a fully integrated club, we have made significant advances in the presentation of our course and facilities and I would like to acknowledge the fiscal decision making of our Board and the strong governance shown, the management “team” of Chris, Michelle, Jim many thanks to you and your staff for establishing a solid base to move forward.

Many thanks to you all again from a proud Tauranga Golf Club member, let’s enjoy what we have..... laugh and the world will laugh with you, moan and you moan alone.

HANDICAP COMMITTEE

Every golf club is required to have a handicap committee, ours comprises the Club Captain, Men’s/Women’s Captain, and our Golf Operations Manager or Head Professional.

With our access to the Dot Golf handicap system, every score card entered is available to be critiqued, and with scanned scorecards a digital image is available to the above committee if there is a reason to question a members handicap.

The fact that everyones handicap record can be viewed online by anyone means that there is always peer review going on and if anyone has an issue with a player they can raise this with the handicap committee. Your first line of contact is to your respective Captain or Convenor.

17TH HOLE
Those who attended the AGM would have heard David Mowat's concerns regarding the length of the 17th Hole. In his opinion, the length of the hole does not meet distance guidelines as specified in the Rules of Handicapping manual.
If the 17th hole was changed to a Par 4 it would become the hardest hole on the back 9.  As the second to last hole in a match, this would be very unfair. These guidelines are just a recommendation and as such, the Club have no intention to make any changes.

PACE OF PLAY POLICY
Pace of Play is a common topic of Clubhouse debate. On normal Club days, we have adopted the Ready Golf principles which seem to be working really well.
However, we do need a Pace of Play Policy for major tournaments and events. This policy is being updated and will be ratified at the next Players Committee meeting. The policy will be published on the club website and on the Local Rules Board.

TEE BOOKINGS
The Club operate an electronic tee booking system that allows members to book their games 14 days in advance. This system works very well most of the time, but every once in a while, a competition setup needs to be changed or matchplay draws need to be added after the tee sheet has opened up.
The Club reserve the right to cancel/delete/move bookings to facilitate changes that may be necessary. Members automatically receive advice if their booking has been changed and where possible, a communication will be sent out to advise the reason for a change. If you have any concerns about bookings being changed, please call the Pro Shop team who will be able to explain.

10TH HOLE GUR
There have been some comments regarding the length of time it has taken to repair the GUR on the 10th hole. This damage was caused by a falling tree a week before the Carrus Open last year.
The Course staff had made some temporary repairs and had planned to complete the work in April this year when the growing season was at it's optimal time. However, you will all be aware that we were in lockdown at this time and Greens staff were on very strict work conditions which did not allow them to carry out this work.
We ask for your continued patience and understanding. The work is scheduled to be done and will be completed as soon as weather conditions allow.

FOAM CUP INSERTS
During the Covid 19 levels we had to make adjustments to course procedures to meet safe practices. One of these was the installation of foam liners in the cups, which enabled balls to be retrieved from the hole without having to remove the flag. These foam liners have been a great help in protecting the hole from damage during these wet months. However, this does conflict with minimum depth requirements under the rules of golf, so these foam inserts have now been removed.
Please help us to protect the edge of the cups from damage - please don't use your putter to scoop out the ball and be mindful about how close you stand to the hole, especially if the greens are wet.

9 HOLE MEN
We are pleased to advise that dedicated Tee Times for 9 Hole Men are now available on a Tuesday afternoon as part of the Men Seniors Competition field. This is an opportunity for 9 Hole men to participate in a very well run Club day and to enjoy some social time with the Men Seniors. The opportunity is also available for 18 Hole men who may not feel up to playing 18 Holes due to injury, illness or personal preference, to still have a game and stay connected with the Seniors group.
If you have any questions, please contact the Pro Shop staff.
