Club’s Strokeplay Championships:-

This Championship is one of the Club’s two most important and prestigious competitions. The Men’s Committee have decided to postpone May’s Strokeplay Championship. We will now schedule the Championships for August.

The Club Strokeplay Championships dates will now be:

· Saturday August 10th

· Saturday August 17th

· Sunday August 18th

· Saturday August 24th

The James Mowat Memorial Trophy

With the Club’s Strokeplay Championships being postponed this creates three free Saturdays in May:

· 11th May

· 18th May

· 25th May

After a discussion with David Mowat he has agreed that we can run the Memorial Trophy across those three dates. The Trophy itself will be awarded to the player who has the three best nett rounds, across all of the divisions; after three rounds of ‘Maximum score’ Strokeplay.

Maximum Score Strokeplay is a new scoring ‘system’ where the maximum score on any hole is twice par; so, for example, the maximum score you can record on a par three is a six, on a par four it will be eight and a par five it would be ten.

We will also be running a Maximum score Strokeplay competition across all three divisions with Prize vouchers for the divisional winners and runners-up, this will be a free entry competition.

Pennants 2019

Following on from their consultation process, Bay of Plenty Golf decided to offer Clubs more choice by way of the following Competitions:

· Championship: - Two seeded divisions of five teams playing 18 holes of Foursomes and 18 holes of Singles.

· Senior: - One Baywide competition with one round of Round Robin before play-offs, playing 18 Holes of Foursomes & 18 holes of Singles

· Intermediate ‘Blue’: play 18 Holes of Foursomes & 18 holes of Singles.
· Intermediate ‘Gold’ play 18 holes of Singles with a 4 Ball Better Ball included.
· Junior ‘Blue’ play 18 Holes of Foursomes & 18 holes of Singles
· Junior ‘Gold’ play 18 holes of singles with a 4 Ball Better Ball included
· Presidents Grade – Minimum Handicap 21.5 playing 18 holes of singles and a 4 Ball Better Ball included.
· Handicap Pennants – 9 holes of Foursome and then 18 Holes of Singles.

Firstly, it is of credit to our Club to be able to enter a team in every one of the eight Pennant Competitions. Bearing in mind the fierce levels of competition it is also with a great deal of pride that we can report the following successes:

Presidents Grade: have already won their division’s Pennant – well done to Fridge and his team.

The Intermediate Blue Team, have reached their final – well done to Lindsay and the team.
The Intermediate Gold Team, have reached their final – well done to Stu and the team.
The Junior Gold Team, have also reached their final – well done to Barry and the team.

We think it fair to point out that both the Senior and Junior Blue Teams were each weakened by the absence of three or more key players. Having said that, to have four of our teams playing in the seven Pennants finals, to date, is a considerable achievement. With the Handicap Pennant Team due to start their season’s run in June, the target is now to reach five out of the eight finals!

We are fast earning the reputation of having the best Member’s Club in the area and this Pennants’ performance will further enhance the Club’s reputation. It is also worth mentioning that most of our Pennant opposition have gone out of their way to compliment our teams on their etiquette and fair play.

Players are always moving up and down the handicap rankings and so there is plenty of opportunity for new players to try and earn a place in one of the teams next year.

Course Conditions

Our course has a great deal of traffic upon it virtually every day of the week and, as a Member’s Club, we cannot afford to employ dozens of ground staff to run around after us repairing our pitch marks and raking our bunkers. One of the most consistent complaints that we get are those relating to pitch marks; poor bunker maintenance and slow play, which is why we are going to introduce a ‘code of conduct’.

Code of Conduct

Players are reminded that within any group the player with the lowest Handicap will be responsible for the on course behavour of that group. In particular they should pay attention to the following:

· Their team’s position in the field; if ground has been lost or if there is slow play within their group they must encourage ready golf.

· To ensure that all players are repairing pitch marks properly
· To ensure that bunkers are being raked properly.
· Players will be required to respect the low handicapper’s instructions or advice.
· If there needs to be a ‘conversation’ between two groups of players (in, say, the case of slow play) then the low handicappers from both groups will have that ‘conversation’.

As a reminder of how to repair pitch marks and proper bunker maintenance please take the time to watch the following short videos.

How to repair a pitch mark

Yes, there is both a good way and a bad way to do it! Apart from pitch marks damaging the green, if they are not repaired damage can also be done by tearing the roots if not done properly (lifting). Please click on this link to see how to do it quickly, properly and professionally.

Raking a Bunker

Again there is a right and a wrong way to rake a bunker.

Matchplay and Strokeplay

The new rules now allow for Committes to combine Matchplay and Strokeplay, and so the Men’s Committee have decided to allow players who are playing a Match to also enter the day’s Strokeplay Competition; this means that there will be more opportunities to post a Shootout score and to enter the Pro’s Haggle. The key points to remember are as follows:

· The Rules for Strokeplay will apply.
· Players MUST putt out – even if the Putt has been given for their Match

If the Committee is asked for a Ruling when players have combined Matchplay and Strokeplay we will apply the Rules of Golf as they would apply to each of Matchplay and Strokeplay separately. For example, if one player did not complete a hole for whatever reason then he or she is disqualified from the Strokeplay Competition.
