FROM THE FRONT OFFICE
Bonjourno!

Yes I am back from my Italian holiday, well rested and looking forward to the summer season.

Well daylight savings is this weekend so this means our popular 10 Holes for $10 will be back. If you have friends or family that are keen to come and give golf a go - 10 for 10 is the ideal option. From 4pm daily (subject to availability) - front 10 holes only. Today I had 2 men walk into my office - they asked to join as Summer members and went on to tell me that they played a few 10 for $10 rounds last year and enjoyed it so much, they decided to step up and become Summer members. A very warm welcome to David Mercer and Martin McCaskill.

Summer memberships are $600 and valid from 1 October to 31 March 2019. Due to the demand on the Saturday field, Summer members are ineligible to play on Saturdays.

Speaking of new members - a very warm welcome to the following members who have joined us since 1 September.
Lachlan Balfour, William Coxhead, Kevin Duckworth, Lance Kepple, Duncan Rutherford, Tyler Wallis, Jonty Wood & Eli Wooten, Jesse Tuke & Ollie Hoare :) Great to see some new faces and some old members back again!

A big thanks must go to the Cafe team. The transition from Classic Cuisine to TGC staff has gone very well. The team are producing a delicious range of food and service with a smile. Thanks to the members too for your support. We are still fine tuning the menu and looking at seasonal food changes to tempt you all. Don't forget that your club prize vouchers can now be used in the Cafe. We also have loyalty cards and once your card has been used, please put your name on the back and give to the staff - we will be doing a monthly prize draw.

This week our 9 Hole ladies are celebrating 20 years of 9 hole golf. Did you know that Tauranga Golf Club was the first club to embrace 9 hole Golf? We now have the largest 9 Hole Womens membership in NZ with 104 members. Congratulations to the current Committee for organising this celebration and to all the past & present 9 hole ladies who have encouraged so many ladies into the game and provided a fun and supportive group within the Club.

Happy Golfing everyone and if I learnt anything from my recent travels it was to appreciate what we have in this beautiful part of the world. We are blessed

A FEW WORDS FROM YOUR CLUB CAPTAIN

Greetings all and welcome to “SPRING". Hopefully drier and warmer weather which will stimulate some growth & recovery on course.

Your Board & Players Committee have been working hard on identifying key projects and tasks that need to be done to improve the playing conditions and to enhance your golfing experience. The following works have been agreed & progress is well underway:
  • Reinstate the drainage in front of the 11th green
  • 1st Tee - railings to be removed & some work on improving the turf & eliminating wear patterns
  • Greens Surrounds to be renovated - ie coring, sand, seed & fertilised
  • Re - establish the forward tee on 16
  • 16th Fairway to be reshaped to address the shade damaged areas
  • Turfing of the bare patches on the 8th tee
  • 3rd Fairway to be prepared for conversion
  • The 12th Bunker project has been rescheduled to happen in April 2019. This will allow Chris to obtain sufficient clean fill and a better time of the year to carry out this project.
Karl Knedler is now taking on the Golf Operations role. Karl will be working closely with the the Greens Superintendent to identify GUR, local rules requirements etc. Karl has worked in the Greenkeeping team and is a BOP Rep golfer, so he will bring some good skills to this role.

We are currently identifying a range of tasks that we can ask our fantastic Volunteers to assist us with. This will allow the Greenkeepers to focus on the more skilled tasks.

I would like also to take this opportunity to thank the Captains & Committee members who selflessly give up their time to organise the various sections of our club, we could not do without you all, so many thanks.

As I am a person that does not look back lets all concentrate on what is ahead of us, and move forward in a constructive and positive manner.

Kind regards

Tony Breeds

COURSE REPORT SEPTEMBER 2018

WINTER: Winter produced a mixture of all weather, we had 530 mm of rain, 14 frosts and minimal sunshine. The course held up well with minimal days of no carts or course closure.

GREENS: Currently the greens are quite firm and rolling well. We are still a bit on the thin side but the soil temperatures are still low,  so once they pick up we will see the turf density improve which will give us better coverage and performance.

We still have a few bare areas on the greens from the spray damage in march. I'm just waiting for renovations which is end of October after the club matchplay where we can attack these areas and get the greens fully covered.

TEES: We are looking to put our first tee onto the same maintenance programme as our greens as this is part of our "shop window". We also have a couple of tees which struggle in general being the 5th and 9th, so I'm just looking to give them some attention and get them nice and healthy going into summer.

FAIRWAYS: As always our fairways are performing well. Over the winter months we kept them clean of poa and made good progress in removing the kikuyu.

We have some spring dead spot around on the fairways which have been more visible this year as our couch didn't really lose its green color. As we get into the drier warmer conditions this grows out. Spring dead spot is caused by high rainfall particularly in autumn. This is just visual and doesn't affect the actual playing surface so there isn't too much to really worry about Ill just keep on top of the renovations we carry out in summer and keep N and K levels up in late summer.

ROUGH: I've just completed my first rough spray. It took 5 weeks to get it all done due to weather conditions and staff levels available but the roughs looking tidy. Ill look to give it another spray over October to get any new or missed weeds.

UP COMING WORK: We are coming up to our busy period so we have plenty of work on. We are looking to tidy up some areas also on the course in particular some turfing in front of 11, turfing on the 8th tees and tidying up some patchy areas on the surrounds while we have favorable conditions.

We have renovation week from 29 October - 2 November incl, and then we get into the conversion of the 3rd fairway in November, so plenty on.

STAFF - Barry Cradock has joined the team as a Mechanic/Greenkeeper. Barry is a Master Auto Technician and is also part way through his level 3 Turf Management qualification. One more level and he will be a fully qualified greenkeeper. Barry's primary responsibility will be the ongoing maintenance of the machinery. We welcome Barry to the Club.
