Mens Competitions

54 Hole Strokeplay Championship

This is one of the Club’s two most important Championship events the other being the Matchplay Championship.

The first round, of three, was played in very testing conditions last Saturday 28th April; with the next rounds due to be played:

· 5th May
· 12th May; this round will be seeded to the top 12 players in each division

Along side the Strokeplay Championship the Men’s Committee will also be running the following Competitions:

The Allen Ward Memorial Trophy.

On the 5th May, after rounds one and two, this Trophy will be awarded to the best Nett total across the three divisions. It is a tradition that the Ward family present their Trophy to the winner; to this end if a morning player is in serious contention he will be asked, by telephone, to come back for prize giving.

The James Mowat Memorial Trophy

On the 12th May, after the three rounds have been completed, this Trophy will be awarded to the best Nett score across all three divisions. As this round is seeded, to the top 12 players in each division, we would expect the winner to be in the Clubhouse to receive their trophy

JC Golf Vouchers

$50 Vouchers will be awarded to the runners-up in the three divisions of the 54 Hole Strokeplay Championship.

Aquila, Wilcox and Green Matchplay

The draw has been made and we now have 16 players in the three divisions who will now play Matchplay on the following dates.

·    Round 1: 19th May

·    Round 2: 9th June

·    Round 3: 7th July

The three Finals will be played on Finals Day.

All matches to be played on or before their due date (by mutual agreement). Your first round matches have already been booked in for you, however, if you cannot make the due dates or do not want to compete PLEASE let the pro-shop know as soon as possible for they have a list of reserve players who would love to take your place!

Matchplay Cards for Handicapping

Now that we are entering the Matchplay season it is an opportune time to remind members of the rules around Matchplay cards.

In short, the NZ Golf handicapping system requires that scores from all forms of competition, including matchplay, must be entered for handicapping purposes.

The only exceptions being Pennants and the Club’s Matchplay Championship.

·    Once you have played 13 Holes of Matchplay if your Match finishes before the 18th and you decide to play on then, for the remaining holes, your score per hole cannot exceed par plus handicap allowance i.e. 2 Stableford points.

In a 9 Hole competition this rule applies after hole 7.

This rule will be posted within the locker room and will be strictly enforced as it will help prevent any unfortunate accusations of handicap ‘manipulation’ if a player’s game deteriorates after his game has been won or lost.

Club Captain

We would like to thank Dave Cooke, who decided not to stand again this year, for all his hard work over recent years and welcome Tony Breeds to the post of Club Captain.

Masters Monday

Once again a big thank you to Jason Ornberg for arranging this very successful event; Dave Cooper (Coops) won the Green Jacket.

Pennants Finals at Ohope

Conditions were truly terrible with a gale force wind driving very heavy rain; it is probably fair to say that on a normal day play would have been cancelled but with Club Calendars being so busy at this time of year the only logical decision was to cancel the Foursomes and just play the Singles. To have played 18 holes in those conditions and then, after a short lunch, to have to go out and do it again, whilst cold and wet, would have been too much to ask of the players..

All of our teams did well but it’s commiserations to the Intermediate & Junior teams who just came up short.

The Champs were all tied up at 3 all so it took the cool head of George Wardell to seal the deal on the first play off hole for our team to retain the title. Well done to you all for reaching the Finals!

Foursomes Challenge 30th June

We have a spare date on the Calendar for 30th June and to make a change from the usual stableford or Medal format we decided on a Foursome Competition. This will be played in one grade with any combination of handicap grades allowed so have a think about who you would like to partner. Booking details will be given in the June Newsletter.
